Founded in 2017, Barti began with one man, one idea and a deep love of seaweed, surfing and good rum.
From “The Crazy Seaweed Man” to Award-Worthy Rum
Jonathan, Barti’s founder, was once known locally as “The Crazy Seaweed Man”. However, his passion for uniquely flavoured food soon turned into something bigger.
After returning from paternity leave, he combined his love of the Pembrokeshire coast, creative adventures with friends and his favourite surf break to create something new.
The result was Barti Spiced Rum, a spiced rum infused with locally foraged laver seaweed. From the very beginning, the mission was simple: craft the world’s best spiced rum while celebrating the story and spirit of Pembrokeshire.

Seaweed sits at the heart of Barti’s flavour profile. The team hand-picks laver from the Pembrokeshire coast, which gives the rum its subtle savoury depth and smooth finish.

Inspired by Jonathan’s favourite Hemingway novel, this release is deep, bold and full of character. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Therefore, it’s perfect for gifting, collecting or opening at a legendary gathering.
Sustainability Beyond the Bottle
Barti goes further than recycled packaging. The team is currently developing a pioneering Blue Carbon Project with marine biologists. The aim is to explore seaweed as a carbon capture solution.
If successful, this project could offer a scalable alternative to tree planting. In turn, businesses and individuals could offset carbon through seaweed cultivation. It’s an ambitious idea, but one rooted firmly in Pembrokeshire waters.
Additionally, Barti supports the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales through the Skomer Island Puffin Project. With direct donations and proceeds from B Corp-created beanie hats, Barti helps protect one of Britain’s most important seabird habitats.
